Caesarstone was the pioneer of the natural quartz surfaces market over 35 years ago. Founded in 1987, its dominant position has been achieved through extensive research and development, highly trained personnel, an advanced market infrastructure, and continuous investment and innovation. For many years Caesarstone has set new standards in innovation and craftsmanship and continues to set the trends in the industry.

Caesarstone surfaces require minimal maintenance to keep them looking like new. Gentle cleaning with soap and water or a mild detergent ensures ease of care for long-lasting luster, and there’s no need to wax or seal. They offer a wide variety of colors, styles, designs and textures of products, along with Caesarstone’s inherent characteristics such as hardness, non-porous, scratch and stain resistance and durability, providing consumers with excellent surfaces for their internal spaces which are highly competitive to granite, manufactured solid surfaces and laminate, as well as to other engineered quartz surfaces.

Caesarstone is the first quartz surfacing company to receive ISO 14001 certification (a global standard specifically for environmental protection), ISO 9001 (quality management standard), NSF (public health and safety) certification and the respected Good Housekeeping Seal from Good Housekeeping Research Institute.

Sustainability

Caesarstone has also pioneered environmental and sustainability standards, such as recycling 97 percent of the water used in manufacturing and collecting dust from shipping, handling, production and processing. Caesarstone consistently seeks to protect the planet and the well-being of their customers.

Currently, 31 percent of their entire portfolio contains at least 40 percent recycled materials, and they expect to incorporate up to 50 percent recycled materials across their mineral collection by 2026. Seven of their models are SCS-certified for their recycled material content, with more certifications in progress.

They have achieved zero waste to landfill in their porcelain manufacturing and are actively working to reduce waste to landfill in their quartz and mineral manufacturing processes.

In 2023, they reached a major milestone in their long-term climate action program by completing the transformation of the entire forklift fleet at their Bar Lev site from diesel to electric. This transformation significantly reduces the carbon footprint of their operations.

Minimizing freshwater use and eliminating wastewater discharge are top priorities. All their manufacturing sites are equipped with advanced wastewater treatment facilities, enabling them to fully reuse their wastewater and achieve zero effluent discharge.

Recognizing that the production and transportation of raw materials are among the most impactful stages of their product lifecycle, they continuously work to enhance operational efficiency and reduce material consumption. Since 2021, they have achieved a 6 percent reduction in material usage per ton of product manufactured in their quartz and mineral portfolio.

“We are witnessing a significant shift toward sustainable materials that prioritize safety for both consumers and fabricators,” says Erik Christensen, President of Caesarstone U.S. “Every step we take in evolving our product offerings – from integrating recycled materials to enhancing safety protocols – is part of our commitment to responsible design. The advancements we are making in our material formulations not only align with our commitment to health-conscious design but also have the added aesthetic benefit of creating enhanced translucency and depth in the final product. We believe that our ongoing innovations, combined with a clear focus on safety, will further shape the future of our industry.”

Silicosis

Of vital importance to Caesarstone and the surface industry in general is a substance called silica. Silica is a “building block” material that forms rocks, soil, sand and other parts of the earth. Silica occurs in either a crystalline or an amorphous structure and is a well-known occupational hazard that has also been recently examined for its environmental concentrations near silica sand mines and transport terminals.

Dust-sized silica particles, invisible to the naked eye, are generated during a variety of activities and can be breathed into the body where they reach deep into the lungs. Breathing crystalline silica repeatedly over many years is a well-known cause of health problems.

Many industrial and commercial processes require crystalline silica. Some of the more notable uses for crystalline silica include glassmaking, roadbuilding, molds for molten metals poured at foundries, hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” for oil and gas production, water filtration and even electronics. Crystalline silica can be released into the air from cutting, grinding, drilling, crushing, sanding or breaking apart many different materials.

The hazard of respirable crystalline silica exposure has been known for decades. There is a famous 1938 video featuring former Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins that describes both the hazards associated with silica exposure and the U.S. Department of Labor’s early efforts to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for America’s working men and women. Although tremendous progress has been made since this video was produced, evidence indicates that a substantial number of workers still suffer from silica-related diseases.

Breathing crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis, which in severe cases can be disabling, or even fatal. When silica dust enters the lungs, it causes the formation of scar tissue, which makes it difficult for the lungs to take in oxygen. There is no cure for silicosis.
