Legrand®, a global specialist in electrical and digital building infrastructures, today announced the launch of its 50A Weather-Resistant Electrical Outlet for EV Chargers (3894WREV), a UL Listed outlet engineered specifically to meet the new requirements for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) introduced in the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC). As EV adoption accelerates and more homebuyers expect built-in charging capability, the new outlet gives electrical contractors, builders, and homeowners a receptacle built for the job, not simply relabeled for it.
Under the 2026 NEC, receptacles used for EVSE must now be specifically listed for EV use and meet UL standards, closing a gap created by outlets that were marketed for EV charging without being engineered or tested for it. The 3894WREV was developed to satisfy that requirement directly as it is molded from nylon 66 for added durability over standard duty receptacles, and it carries EV and WR (weather resistant) markings directly on the device so contractors and inspectors can identify it at a glance.
Key Features at a Glance:
- UL Listed and rated for use with EV chargers and RVs, indoors and outdoors
- Molded from nylon 66 for enhanced durability
- Engineered to meet 2026 NEC requirements for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE)
- EV and WR markings built into the device outlet for easy identification
- Must be installed downstream of a GFCI outlet
- Installs with an included Allen wrench and durable mounting screws
“As EV adoption grows, homeowners want charging solutions that are safe today and ready for tomorrow,” said Racheal Rich, Senior Product Manager, Legrand Electrical Infrastructure. “The 2026 NEC raised the bar by requiring outlets that are actually listed for EV use, and we saw that as a chance to build something better, not just a box to check. The 3894WREV was engineered specifically to meet that requirement, so contractors can install it with confidence and homeowners can charge with peace of mind.”
Many outlets marketed as EV compatible were never engineered or listed for that specific use, which is the gap the 2026 NEC closes by requiring EVSE receptacles to be listed for EV use and to pass UL standards. At a glance, the 3894WREV can resemble Legrand’s standard 50A outlet for ranges and dryers (3894), which is why the EV and WR markings, along with the outlet’s nylon 66 construction, are built into the device itself so the correct outlet is easy to specify and identify on site. The 3894WREV is rated for both indoor and outdoor installation, supporting home EV charging in garages and outdoor spaces as well as RV hookups from a single design.
Adoption of the 2026 NEC varies by state and jurisdiction, but Legrand designed the 3894WREV for projects that want to get ahead of the requirement now. Specifying a listed EV outlet today can help keep projects on schedule and passing inspection regardless of a jurisdiction’s adoption timeline, while reducing liability tied to outlets that only claim EV compatibility without the listing to back it up.
