HUNTER DOUGLAS RECENTLY INTRODUCED TWO NEW ADDITIONS to its Design Studio™ featured artist program and its line of side panels and drapery, roman shades and roller shades. Two renowned artists – San Francisco-based textile designer Seema Krish and New York-based visual artist Marcie Bronkar – have created inventive patterns and textural details in a wide ranging collection that draw on global influences and traditional cultural reference points.

“I believe textiles should connect us with places and help to transport us to the beautiful world beyond the walls of our homes.”

Seema Krish

honoring tradition

Inspired by the heritage of handmade, Seema’s heirloom textile designs tell the story of iconic Indian craftsmanship. By blending traditional techniques with modern aesthetics, she gives new context to India’s rich textile traditions.

Influenced by her upbringing in Mumbai, her work focuses on handcraft and holds a contemporary lens to the vibrant motifs and techniques of traditional Indian textiles. Seema looked to nature and drew on the aesthetics of block printing and embroidery, in particular, to create her new patterns for Hunter Douglas.

Her Woodlands fabric is inspired by the natural landscape and trees that surround us, this pattern captures the depth that nature offers. It uses the many tones of a single color and combines printing and embroidery techniques to create dimensionality at the window. In her Tangle pattern, Seema brings the movement of climbing vines to life. The variegated embroidery lends a tactile quality to this textile, which enhances the depth and drama of the design and easily stands out within a room’s interior.

“They can be used by themselves or effortlessly layered together,” Krish says of the seven designs in the collection. “The hope is to spark a memory of travel or a distant culture while bringing quiet beauty to our living environments. The Hunter Douglas collection as a whole is a mix of place, of nature and techniques. I believe textiles should connect us with places and help to transport us to the beautiful world beyond the walls of our homes.”

“While creating my collection for Hunter Douglas, I relied on the premise that natural light can and will enhance the texture and dimension of these textiles when brought into the home.”Marci Bronkar

timeless design

Marcie creates an environment that honors the integrity and history of yesterday while maintaining a keen eye for the present. The attention to detail promises nothing ever dated or contrived. Timeless design that evokes both comfort and beauty.

As an accomplished artist based in Manhattan, Marcie draws inspiration from historical period artwork and objects, reinterpreting them with a modern twist that forms the basis of her textile designs. Her collections feature highly stylized patterns and nuanced colorways that pay homage to their historical roots, yet beautifully integrate with today’s more contemporary traditional décor.

Marcie’s collection of vintage batik fabrics led to batik-inspired Amaryllis design, where hand-dyed fabrics are stamped with wax and cured in the sunshine of exotic locales. For a distinctive, elegant touch, this pattern perfectly juxtaposes with clean-lined furniture.

Another from the seven designs she has created is Menagerie, named after a classic English Jacobean pattern rendered in a toile de Jouy style. Marcie took original artwork and translated the design for a modern aesthetic, resulting in a fabric that can take center stage or serve as a foundational accent.

“While creating my collection for Hunter Douglas, I relied on the premise that natural light can and will enhance the texture and dimension of these textiles when brought into the home.”
