Thermador: the connected kitchen

Thermador’s smart technology brings kitchens into the 21st century

BY GEORGE MCCLURE

It should come as no surprise to learn that Thermador today is a leader in the connected kitchen. In fact, every product category they offer is a connected device…

THERMADOR was founded in 1916 and began life specializing in portable and builtin heaters. It wasn’t until 1932 that the Thermador Electric Manufacturing Company entered the appliance world. Over the years they have introduced some of the most innovative products of their time that resonate even to this day and age – the first wall oven and cooktop, stainless steel home appliances, the warming drawer, and the first self-cleaning oven.
Thermador also has featured in our cultural life. Did you know that Alice of Brady Bunch lore cooked with Thermador appliances? (If you know who Alice is, you have earned your Brownie Points for the day!)

Did you also know that Julia Child used a Thermador oven in her acclaimed PBS TV series? Not only that, but Julia Child’s kitchen was inducted into the Smithsonian Institution and it features a Thermador oven. The brand has a rich history and is known universally for its commitment to excellence.

It should come as no surprise then to learn that Thermador today are leaders in the connected kitchen. In fact, every product in every category they offer is a connected device. Let’s take a closer look at some of the products we believe represent best-in-class. How they connect and the experience of living in the world of Thermador.

Home Connect™

Home Connect is the mobile app for the Thermador product range. And here’s a cool feature we wish more products would offer – you can download the app and run it in the demo mode. You don’t have to register a product or sign up with your email address. It’s free and allows you to take the app for a test drive to see if the features offered in the Thermador connected kitchen are for you. We had a blast taking the app for a spin and found it to be intuitive and very easy to navigate.

For any smart or connected device, a key feature today is that you must be able to play nice with your friends. And Thermador has some nifty friends who they’ve partnered with, including other smart devices and services. Not only does Thermador offer hands-free voice control throughout their connected kitchen via Amazon’s Alexa, they also offer a seamless luxury experience with Josh.ai that can coordinate with the rest of your smart home.

Another great partnership is with EVE for Tesla. Say you’re running late getting home after work, you can simply preheat the oven from the dashboard of your Tesla. And who wouldn’t want to connect with Kitchen Stories from the editors of Food & Wine and be inspired by new recipes with easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions? As more and more devices connect with each other, it is these strategic partnerships that will enable the homeowner to simplify the user experience. That takes outreach and a commitment to continue to evolve and we see nothing but good things behind Thermador’s vision of connectivity.

Thermador also has taken the time to design a great user experience with personalized control. Their Pro Ranges allow you to preheat your oven from your smart device, adjust heating modes and settings remotely, and receive a ping reminder when the oven is at full preheat or your dish is complete. They even support remote appliance diagnostics directly from the Thermador support team in case there’s a problem with the range.

That same level of personalized control is available across the product line including induction cooktops, dishwashers, built-in ovens, and their 24-inch wine-preservation column. Thermador’s smart design also extends into the world of refrigeration, featuring independent zones of temperatures for various food groups. Smart and energy efficient, with built-in cost savings.

So how does all this smart stuff get connected? It’s as simple as having a reliable wireless network. Since no one can predict how many smart IoT products for kitchen use will be coming down the road, we recommend a wireless access point be installed to cover the kitchen and dining room. After all, in just a few years your dinner guests will probably all be sporting augmented reality goggles and that’s going to eat up plenty of bandwidth! Tap into the possibilities with the Thermador connected kitchen. We really like their approach in offering a simple, intuitive app and voice command capabilities. Oh, and by the way, they offer that legendary Thermador performance. The connected kitchen by Thermador is just another achievement for one of the legendary leaders in kitchen appliances.
